No one plays instruments anymore. Everyone now is a Gwen, Kelly, Mariah, Diddy, Kayne, etc. Just a smiling face and a trendy outfit singing someone else's lyrics. Where are the singers who can sing, play the piano or guitar at the same time?

You need to stop listening to the radio. Talk to your friends, you'll find tons of music with real musicians.

Hey guys, I have just stumbled across this site, sitting here in little South Wales and want to at my thoughts, hope thats ok. Listen to as much Coldplay as you can, they are touring the states right now. Listen to Stereophonics, Kelly has a top voice. My final tips are KT Tunstall, she is amazing and James Blunt, very good. Try and get hold of these, they are cool. Nos Da ( Good night in Welsh)

You are listening to the 'Mass' Media- Alot of talented musicians and bands are playing in Europe where they are more appreciated. Alot of the great bands form 70s-80s are still around- but mainstream radio wont play 'em. You just have to look harder.

Dig a little deeper. There are SCADS of talented musicians pickin' and grinnin'. I agree with the folks who say you need to look outside the mainstream media - even just a little, and you'll find plenty of "artists" in a plethora of categories.

You'll find bazillions of extremely talented singer-songwriters (and yes, instrumentalists too) on folk music stations like Folk Alley on the Web, WUMB in Boston and on XM satellite radio.

There is still good music being made today, you just have to dig a little deeper to find it. Look beyond the predigested pap which the major record labels are trying to force on us. Skip the empty-headed bubblegum pop. In the far corner of your record store, you might find one or two discs by groups named Moe. Umphrey's McGee. Max Creek. Railroad Earth. And just about any band which includes Steve Kimock is likely to be good. The quality music might be harder to find than it once was, but it's still out there!

with talent like Keane, Franz Fredenand, Robbie Williams, U2 and dare I say it... even Paul McCartney still releasing albums of quality tracks all performed by the artists there is still a wealth of quality singer/songwriters out there. There is, however, an overwhelming amount of 'produced pop' being released by record companies currently. If these 'pop idol' and 'x-factor' short life celebs keep on selling loads of one hit wonders then i'm afraid there will always be a battle between true tallent and one hit wonder tallentless but extremely well branded and marketed singers. The only way to avoid this is not to buy any of the one hit wonder singles. Most of them are only being bought for the 'sex symbol' status of the 'artists' (a term i use loosely). Has anyone ever witnessed a tallent show winner that was less than pleasing to the eye? Stop buying th C.D.'s and stop watching the shows. Eventually even Simon Cowell should get the picture.

I just answered a post about Cake Bake Betty. You won't hear her on the radio, except college radio cause she's one of many indie artists whose labels don't pay to get her played. Music doesn't get played on US because it's the "best" music, just the most heavily marketed. Stick to small labels like K, Sub Pop and Infinity Cat and you'll hear real artists. Cake Bake Betty is on Infinity Cat at www.infinitycat.com

I agree; rare to hear some 30-ish saying such smart things about the lack of real talent; just yelling unintelligible ''lyrics'' above noise. Real talent doesn't have a chance.

Stick to country music, not the new stuff, but the old stuff from Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, David Allen Coe, Jerry Jeff Walker, Willie, Johnny, Hank, etc. Ever hear of them? Nothing more real than a bunch of "outlaws" trying to make a living back in the 60's and 70's.

I've always felt the best music is down the "road less traveled" - in other words not on the radio. If you want a great songwriter, check out Robert Earl Keen. This guy has been around forever and he is more along the lines of Lyle Lovett (they were roommates once). Start out with Live Dinner #5 and go from there.

Dont forget the Simpson sisters! They're not really even that good looking under the makeup. The real musicians are where they have always been, playing in smoky bars and ice houses for little money but alot of the satisfaction that comes with playing live music. sadly, its the jessicas and the britneys of the pop world that get all the advertising and monetary backing of the music industry. when the american public wises up, (long shot but ya never know) and quits buying the drivel being pushed by the music industry, then maybe we'll get back to a time where real musicianship has value, and the fluff is sent back to the kinder care set where it belongs.

You are absolutely right, if you listen to the radio, all you hear is garbage. If you want to hear really talented musicians, check out Keller Williams, Moe., Lamont Smooth, Ron Noyes Band, Raq, and many others. You will not hear them on the radio, but that probably is because they actaully are good. There is alot of good music out there, you just have to look for it. You cannot let the radio tell you what is good. It is my best experience that the mainstream promotes beautiful faces and pretty voices above real talent. Unfortunately if you want good music, you have to look for it.

I admit to being a geezer--56--but I hold the opinion that real musicians have talent, education, and experience. To earn a decent living and be recognized, they also must have extreme luck going for them, because they certainly can't count on the currently abysmal musical taste of most Americans. The music of previous centuries, and most of the recorded music of the first six decades of the twentieth century qualify as real music--emotional, often complex, engaging, thought-provoking, and always beautiful. Of course there is music like this that's available today, but it's no longer mainstream, and it once was. I do not think this bodes well for the future of our civilization. Historically, any civilization that has taken the "easy way out" culturally goes surely into decline and eventual oblivion. I offer the following as food for thought. I happen to be very fond of the recordings of Enrico Caruso (the absolute master of all singers) and others of his generation. How many people my age listen to his recordings any more? How many who are younger? How many are educated enough musically to know what to listen for? Sarah Brightman? Charlotte Church? Andrea Boccelli!! Please, don't make me cry. None of them know anything about singing. They're nothing more than packages sold by suits in megacorporate America and Europe whose sole interest is making money, not presenting true art and musicianship. And don't get me started on rappers of any ethnicity--music is more than short rhyming stanzas and rhythms that a preschooler could mimic. This is representative of what's happening across our culture, in multiple disciplines. In fact, there is no actual "discipline"--anything goes. Any half-baked, but popular, form of self-expression is now "art" whether or not it actually communicates anything worth expressing. Thank you Mr. Edison, for having made recorded music possible; otherwise, I think I would lose my mind.

I agree that there seems to be no real talent ,As I'm a guitar player singer and songwriter. Seems even the people I play with all want to be the star without even knowing or putting forth the effort to play well. And the large companies just look what someone looks like not the talent they have . It's all about the money but what can you exspect from American people? They have become A I want it now Group kind of lazy and wanting everything handed to them on a silver platter.

Yeah, no one plays instruments like the good old days of Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Bing Crosby, Celine Dion, Madonna...what instruments did they play? Every generation has bands, musicians who can sing, and just plain singers. Some are crappy--like Coldplay--some can really sing, like Mariah. Take it easy...there's enough talent to go around.

You can thank Hip Hop and R&B for the lack of players....it seems that for the last twenty years pop singers all take the Star Search approach: Fake gospel emotion with no true soul! You'd think that the only way to sing is as if you were in church!

We can all agree that the "artists" you mention have no musical talent. Only mindless childeren, moms, and fat tan chicks actually buy those albums. Similar to myspace, these entertainers have created what people want. Taken pictures from every angle, and photo shopped some silicone breasts. Sadly there record labels are the largest, and like Myspace there is no stopping these talentless creations. I suggest getting into your local music scene, im sure there are lots of actual muscians in your town. Just stay away from anything you could buy at Wal-Mart, or that is advertised on MYSPACE.....
